(A) The Manifesto 2000

The
United Nations has declared 2001-2010 International decade for a culture of
peace and non violence for the children of the world. Anchored in the
Manifesto 2000 originally drafted by a group of Nobel Peace Laureates and
signed by more than 76 million people as of February
2003: |
 ecause
the year 2000 must be a new beginning, an opportunity to transform -
all together - the culture of war and violence into a culture of peace
and non-violence. |
|
 ecause
this transformation demands the participation of each and every one of
us, and must offer young people and future generations the values that
can inspire them to shape a world based on justice, solidarity,
liberty, dignity, harmony and prosperity for all. |
|
 ecause
the culture of peace can underpin sustainable development,
environmental protection and the well-being of each person. |
|
 ecause
I am aware of my share of responsibility for the future of humanity,
in particular to the children of today and tomorrow. |
I pledge in my daily life, in my family, my work, my community, my
country and my region, to:
|
 |
Respect the life and
dignity of each human being without discrimination or prejudice; |
 |
Practise active non-violence,
rejecting violence in all its forms: physical, sexual, psychological,
economical and social, in particular towards the most deprived and
vulnerable such as children and adolescents; |
 |
Share my time and material resources in a
spirit of generosity to put an end to exclusion, injustice and
political and economic oppression; |
 |
Defend freedom of expression and cultural
diversity, giving preference always to dialogue and listening
without engaging in fanaticism, defamation and the rejection of
others; |
 |
Promote consumer behaviour that is responsible
and development practices that respect all forms of life and
preserve the balance of nature on the planet; |
 |
Contribute to the development of my community,
with the full participation of women and respect for democratic
principles, in order to create together new forms of solidarity;

The Peace 2000 Call for Human Security
Our planet has been transformed through the evolution of technology, the
media and
economics. Nations have produced stockpiles of deadly weapons capable of
destroying most life on our planet. Increasing numbers of people
suffer from the tools of war and from poverty. We realise that our
environment recognises no national boundaries and that all people ultimately
share the same destiny. We call on governments and leaders of the
world to: |
- form a new global security alliance based on equal partnership in
favour of a security council or military alliance dominated by a few based
on financial or military might
- transform our national military to become a part of a permanent Earth
Corps under the auspices of the new global alliance to provide us with
national security, terrorist and drug policing, assistance in the
eradication of poverty and preservation of the environment.
- work through the new global alliance to abolish the national military
concept, the arms trade and weapons of mass destruction, and
- strengthen humanitarian law and institutions for the period of
transition to a world without war
- examine the causes of conflict and develop creative ways of preventing
and resolving conflict and
- use the tremendous resources liberated by the reduction of the
arms trade for the eradication of poverty, preservation of the
environment and the peaceful transition to a world of human security and
democracy where the wellbeing and freedom of all peoples is a the centre.

(C) Denouncing violence,
terrorism and warfare
We are experiencing the spread of a culture of violence encouraged
by our media and which is threatening the future of humankind. Fortunately
there is a growing consensus that human
security cannot be achieved by or for one group at the expense of another.
A call to arms using terrorism or military means cannot secure our future.
We denounce aggression as a means to solving political problems: |
- Over 1000 studies show that media violence can lead to
aggressive behavior in children. We denounce the growing trend of violent
toys, games and entertainment and pledge not to become a party to the
production or distribution of such material.
- We condemn the use of terrorism and military aggression as a means to
solve political problems, and pledge not to provide goods or services
intended for use by military forces or terrorists.
